What is Trauma?

At its core, trauma is an emotional and psychological response to an event that overwhelms the mind's ability to cope. Trauma can be caused by any event, from physical and emotional abuse to car accidents, natural disasters, and other unexpected life experiences. Trauma does not come from the events alone. Trauma is created when the events cause a person to become β€˜stuck’ in the response from an event and from a possible lack of support from those around them.

The effects of trauma can manifest in many different ways. It can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, fear, or intense grief. You may find yourself avoiding certain people, places, or things because they remind you of the traumatic event. Or you might experience flashbacks and nightmares that are painful and confusing.
